New publication “A Systematic Review of the Cost-Effectiveness of Interventions for Chronic Wounds”
Betthera team successfully published systematic review of the Cost-Effectiveness of Interventions for Chronic Wounds, published under the project FORCE REPAIR.
The article presents a systematic review of studies evaluating the cost-effectiveness of various treatment strategies for chronic wounds, particularly diabetic foot ulcers and venous/arterial leg ulcers of the lower extremities, published between 2013 and 2023. Following PRISMA methodology, the authors analyzed 14 eligible studies, comparing healing time, quality-of-life outcomes (QALYs/QALWs), and direct as well as indirect treatment costs. All cost data were inflation-adjusted to 2023 values and standardized using purchasing power parity to enable cross-study comparison. The median healing time was approximately 2.5 months, and the average cost of complete chronic wound healing was USD 6,435 (median USD 5,814). The review highlights substantial heterogeneity across studies and treatment modalities, identifies potentially cost-effective technologies (such as extracellular matrices and superabsorbent dressings), and emphasizes the need for greater methodological standardization to better define cost-effectiveness boundaries in chronic wound care.
